Massachusetts Life & Health exam and resident-license path
Massachusetts no longer requires producer prelicensing coursework. This online Self Study product provides optional independent preparation for the separately tested Life and Accident and Health lines.
Testing changed today: Pearson begins administering Massachusetts insurance exams July 22, 2026. Remote testing is no longer available; candidates test in person at authorized Pearson centers.
1. Prepare for two separate exams
Life and Accident and Health, or Sickness, are separate producer exams. Each has 80 scored questions plus 10 unscored pretest questions. The scaled passing score is 70, not 70%.
2. Reserve each $37 exam
Pearson lists $37 per exam. Its program page says one-day advance scheduling while the June handbook says 48 hours. Use the stricter 48-hour lead time, confirm availability, and expect in-person testing.
3. Apply after passing
Apply through NIPR for the lines sought. Current rules list a $225 Insurance Producer state fee, excluding the NIPR transaction fee. The $75 lead-paint surcharge does not apply to Life or Health.
4. Separate product requirements
Annuity sales require separate approved training under 211 CMR 96. Variable Life and Variable Annuity authority requires underlying Life authority and a FINRA CRD number.
Hiring or training a Massachusetts team?
TSI has historically seen first-attempt pass rates around 80% in tracked larger-group classes where complete outcome reporting is available. Results vary by state, line, delivery method, and cohort. This is a cross-cohort management observation, not a Massachusetts- or Life and Health-specific aggregate or guarantee.
TSI supports recurring agency, carrier, and recruiting cohorts with consolidated enrollment and manager visibility. Build a group licensing plan or email Support@TSINational.com.
Current official Massachusetts sources
- Massachusetts DOI July 2026 testing transition
- Pearson Massachusetts insurance program and scheduling
- Pearson June 2026 candidate handbook and July 22 content outlines
- Division-published producer prelicensing guidance (use the current DOI and Pearson pages for vendor instructions)
- Massachusetts Life, Health, and variable-line application guidance
- 211 CMR 96 annuity suitability and training requirements
- Current NIPR Massachusetts resident rules and state fees
Course boundary: Purchase provides 70 days of independent online Self Study access. It is optional exam preparation, not required Massachusetts education, and does not include Pearson exams, state or NIPR fees, annuity training, variable-product authority, appointment, or license. TSI does not claim Massachusetts DOI, Pearson, or NIPR recommendation or endorsement and does not guarantee study completion, exam passage, application approval, appointment, or license issuance.
Massachusetts licensing FAQ
Does Massachusetts require prelicensing coursework for a resident Life or Health producer license?
The Division-published producer guidance says prelicensing coursework is no longer required for individual producers and recommends preparation. This TSI product is optional independent preparation, not state-required or state-endorsed education.
Who administers Massachusetts insurance exams beginning July 22, 2026?
Pearson administers Massachusetts insurance licensing exams beginning July 22, 2026. Exams on or before July 16 used Prometric, and July 17 through July 21 was a statewide testing blackout.
Can I take a Massachusetts insurance exam remotely?
No. Beginning July 22, 2026, Massachusetts insurance licensing exams are administered in person at authorized Pearson test centers. Remote testing is not available.
Are Life and Accident and Health one combined Massachusetts exam?
No. Massachusetts uses separate Life and Accident and Health, or Sickness, producer examinations. Applicants seeking both lines take both exams.
How many questions are on each Massachusetts Life or Health exam?
Each outline contains 50 scored general-knowledge questions plus 5 unscored pretest questions and 30 scored Massachusetts-specific questions plus 5 unscored pretest questions: 80 scored and 10 unscored questions per exam.
How much do the Massachusetts Life and Health exams cost?
Pearson currently lists $37 for the Life producer exam and $37 for the Accident and Health, or Sickness, producer exam. Each reservation and retake requires its own fee.
What score is needed to pass a Massachusetts insurance exam?
The scaled passing score is 70. It is not 70 percent or a raw number correct. Passed score reports show pass status; failed candidates receive a numeric score and diagnostic information.
How far ahead should I reserve a Pearson appointment?
Pearson's program page says appointments may be made up to one calendar day before testing, while the June 2026 handbook says at least 48 hours. Use the stricter 48-hour lead time, confirm availability, and do not expect walk-in testing.
How do I retake a failed Massachusetts insurance exam?
Register again through Pearson and pay another exam fee. The current handbook does not state a separate ordinary-producer waiting period, but availability and eligibility still apply.
What happens after I pass the required exams?
Apply through NIPR for the lines sought. Current resident rules list a $225 Insurance Producer state fee; NIPR transaction fees are separate. The $75 lead-paint surcharge applies to Property, Casualty, or Personal Lines, not Life or Health.
Does every Massachusetts resident producer applicant need fingerprints?
The current NIPR resident-producer rules do not list a universal fingerprint requirement. The Division may request supporting documents when reviewing disclosures or other application facts.
What does TSI's roughly 80% first-attempt pass-rate figure mean?
It is a management observation from tracked larger-group classes where complete outcome reporting is available. Results vary by state, line, delivery method, and cohort. It is not a Massachusetts- or Life and Health-specific aggregate and is not a guarantee.
Does the product title mean Massachusetts annuity or variable-product training is included?
No. Annuity sales require separate approved training under 211 CMR 96. Variable Life and Variable Annuity authority requires underlying Life authority and a FINRA CRD number. This purchase is exam preparation and does not establish those requirements.
What is included in the $114.95 TSI course?
Purchase provides 70 days of independent online Self Study access with videos, Massachusetts regulation review, study material, notes, flash cards, and unlimited practice tests. Exams, state and NIPR fees, product training, appointment, and license are separate.
Official-source facts reviewed July 22, 2026. Confirm changing schedules, fees, outlines, application instructions, and product-training rules with Massachusetts DOI, Pearson, and NIPR before acting.
