Maine Property & Casualty exam and resident-license path
For the standard first-time resident route, Maine requires the examination before the application. The former producer education requirement was repealed in 2007. This 70-day online Self Study product is optional independent exam preparation, not state-required or state-endorsed education.
Choose the matching Pearson exam: the combined Property & Casualty exam is code 12-ME-03, lasts 3 hours 30 minutes, costs $80, and contains 140 scored plus 17 unscored pretest questions. Pearson also lists separate two-hour Property and Casualty exams at $55 each.
1. Understand the combined outline
The current combined outline contains 50 scored Property questions plus 5 pretest, 50 scored Casualty questions plus 5 pretest, and 40 scored Maine-law questions plus 7 pretest. Pretest questions are mixed into the exam and are not identified.
2. Reserve a test-center appointment
Reserve at least 24 hours before the desired examination, subject to availability. Walk-ins are unavailable. Current official materials describe test-center delivery and do not list an OnVUE or remote option.
3. Use the scaled score and validity correctly
The scaled passing score is 70, not 70% or a raw number correct. Candidates receive a score report; unsuccessful candidates receive a numeric score and diagnostic information. Results are valid for two years. A failed or missed exam requires a new reservation and fee.
4. Apply after the required examination
Apply through NIPR or the Bureau paper route. The current state amount is a $15 application fee plus a $10 producer-license fee; NIPR transaction fees are separate. NIPR requires proof of Maine residency through the attachment warehouse and does not list a universal fingerprint requirement.
Conditional 2026 apprentice route
A separate Maine law effective January 1, 2026 permits a conditional apprentice license without the exam for certain sponsored, employed Maine residents for no more than 180 days. It is not the standard exam-first route, does not apply to every applicant, and is not a benefit included with this product.
