Current Rhode Island resident sequence
- Choose Life & Health, Property & Casualty, or both based on the authority needed.
- Use optional independent Self Study if helpful. Rhode Island does not require or approve prelicensing education.
- Schedule each applicable Pearson VUE producer exam at least 24 hours before the desired date. The current handbook identifies separate Life, Accident & Health, Property, and Casualty exams.
- Each major-line exam allows 1 hour 15 minutes for General knowledge plus 45 minutes for Rhode Island law. The current test-center table lists $80 per exam and says two exams scheduled back to back are buy-one-get-one-free.
- The passing score is a scaled 70. Give at least 48 hours notice to change or cancel, and wait 24 hours before making a retake reservation.
- After passing the required exams, allow 3 to 5 business days for results to reach NIPR. Apply within one year.
- Current NIPR requirements list a $120 resident Insurance Producer state fee, excluding NIPR transaction fees, and require a certified background check for all Rhode Island residents.
- The Rhode Island Attorney General currently lists the state BCI at $5. A resident producer who sells, solicits, or negotiates insurance must maintain errors-and-omissions coverage.
