Current South Dakota resident sequence

  1. Choose Life & Health, Property & Casualty, or both based on the authority needed.
  2. Use optional independent Self Study if helpful. South Dakota does not require prelicensing education, and the Division does not specify an official study material.
  3. Choose the $95 Life, Accident & Health or Sickness combination exam or the $95 Property & Casualty combination exam. Each allows 150 minutes and lists 145 questions.
  4. Both combination exams are listed for test centers and OnVUE online proctoring. The Life-only exam is test-center only.
  5. Schedule at least 24 hours before the desired date. The passing score is a scaled 70.
  6. Cancel or reschedule at least 24 hours before the exam. After an unsuccessful attempt, wait 24 hours before scheduling a retake.
  7. After passing, wait 48 hours so results can reach SBS and NIPR, then apply within 180 days.
  8. NIPR currently lists a $25 resident Insurance Producer fee, excluding its transaction fee.
  9. Application approval, any required appointment, and license issuance remain separate from the course, exam, and application.
