Identify which renewal situation applies
- Before expiration: submit the renewal application and fee and satisfy all applicable renewal requirements on time.
- Timely renewal, awaiting processing: Insurance Code section 1720 permits eligible licensees to continue under the existing license for up to 60 days after expiration, or until CDI gives notice of a deficient application, whichever happens first. All renewal requirements must be satisfied, including the timely application and fee and required CE or training. This rule excludes suspended and revoked licenses.
- Requirements completed late: use the reinstatement rules, not the conditional continuation rule. CDI states that a licensee whose expired license requires reinstatement cannot transact insurance business until reinstatement.
Check the date even if no renewal email arrives
CDI generally emails a reminder about 90 days before expiration. The date is also on the license. A missing email does not change it: the CDI renewal FAQ explains how to check license status, the expiration date and CE credits.
The online renewal guidance describes the on-time service window as 1 to 90 days before expiration. California residents may start the online process before finishing required CE, but the license will not renew until those requirements are met. CDI recommends finishing CE at least 60 days early to allow provider reporting; that is planning guidance, not a replacement deadline.
If the license needs reinstatement
CDI describes reinstatement eligibility for up to one year after expiration, with the original renewal fee plus a 50 percent reinstatement fee. Complete the applicable requirements and check the resulting license status before resuming insurance business. After one year, a new application is required; consult the requirements for your license class. Bail agents cannot use late renewal and must reapply if they miss expiration.
For individual licensees, CDI also explains that insurance-company appointments are cancelled following post-expiration reinstatement. Appointments are not required to reinstate the license, but applicable appointments are required before transacting for an insurance company. Review the resident, nonresident and business-entity reinstatement instructions for your situation.
A practical renewal record
TSI planning suggestion: keep one record with the expiration date, applicable CE or training completion, application receipt, fee receipt and current license status. A submission receipt and an active license are different checkpoints. If a requirement or status is unclear, use CDI’s licensing guidance before relying on continued authority.
Official action: use Sircon’s California licensing services for the renewal or reinstatement route identified by CDI. Keep the confirmation and check the outcome.
Verification step: Verify your CE requirements and approved providers with your state insurance regulator before choosing a course. Review the California CE guide.
