  1. Choose the exact lines needed. Life, Health, Property, and Casualty are separate examinations; a combined TSI prep product does not combine the state exams.
  2. Confirm acceptable proof of a prelicensing course of study with DISB before relying on this or any provider course. The Commissioner does not mandate a 40-hour course, but the handbook still instructs candidates to show proof of study.
  3. Schedule each Pearson exam at least 24 hours ahead. Each Life, Health, Property, or Casualty exam currently costs $75, allows two hours, and uses a required scaled passing score of 70.
  4. Apply electronically through NIPR 24 hours after passing and within one year. NIPR lists a $100 state fee for the Life grouping or the Property and Casualty grouping, excluding its transaction fee.
  5. Follow the state’s fingerprint and background-review instructions. An insurer appointment is separate when the producer acts as an agent of an insurer.

District of Columbia licensing FAQ

Does Washington, D.C. mandate a 40-hour prelicensing course?

No. The current Pearson VUE handbook says the Commissioner does not mandate a 40-hour course. The same handbook tells candidates to show proof of a prelicensing course of study before sitting for an exam, so confirm acceptable documentation with DISB before relying on any provider course.

Are the major-line examinations combined?

No. The current handbook says all examinations are offered individually. Life, Health, Property, and Casualty are four separate examinations.

What do the exams currently cost and how long do they allow?

The current handbook lists a $75 fee per examination and two hours each for Life, Health, Property, and Casualty. It lists a required scaled producer passing score of 70.

How many questions are on the Life and Health exams?

The current outlines list 50 scored plus 5 pretest general questions on each exam, plus 30 scored and 5 pretest District questions for Life or 25 scored and 5 pretest District questions for Health.

How many questions are on the Property and Casualty exams?

The current outlines list 50 scored plus 5 pretest general questions on each exam, plus 25 scored and 5 pretest District questions for Property or 30 scored and 5 pretest District questions for Casualty.

The handbook says to apply electronically through NIPR 24 hours after passing and within one year. NIPR currently lists a $100 state fee for either the Life grouping or the Property and Casualty grouping, excluding the NIPR transaction fee.

Are fingerprints required for an initial resident producer?

Yes. DISB says an examination and fingerprints are required for an initial District of Columbia producer license. NIPR says applications requiring fingerprints are deferred for state review and a licensing specialist provides scheduling instructions.

Is TSI claiming DISB approval or a licensing guarantee?

No. These are independent online exam-preparation products. TSI does not claim DISB, Pearson VUE, or NIPR approval or endorsement and does not guarantee documentation acceptance, exam passage, fingerprint or background review, application approval, appointment, or license issuance.
