Recommended application sequence
- Choose the Maryland line or lines of authority you need.
- Use Prometric’s Maryland insurance exam content outlines to prepare. Maryland no longer provides approved prelicensing-provider lists for exam applicants.
- Schedule and pass the required Maryland exam for the requested line.
- Submit the NAIC Uniform Individual Application through NIPR or the paper process if required.
- Track the application using the transaction number and Maryland producer lookup tools.
- After approval, print the license through SBS and confirm appointment obligations before transacting business.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Following outdated Maryland pages or vendor copy that still says an approved prelicensing course is required for exam applicants.
- Confusing exam preparation with a state-approved prelicensing mandate.
- Applying for Variable Life and Annuity Products without the required underlying Life license and FINRA/SIE status.
- Assuming Maryland mails license copies. Maryland directs licensees to print the license after approval.
