- Choose Life & Health, Property & Casualty, or both based on the authority needed.
- Use optional independent Self Study if helpful. New Mexico does not require a prelicensing study course, does not specify an official study manual, and does not recommend study materials.
- Schedule the applicable PSI exam. Combined L&H series 18-27 and combined P&C series 18-31 are currently listed for test-center or online-proctored delivery.
- Take the applicable combined exam. Series 18-27 and 18-31 are each currently listed at $75, 150 items, 2.5 hours, and 70% correct to pass, with 5 to 10 possible unscored experimental questions.
- After passing, complete the resident national background check using OSI service code 2BH27J. OSI says the report can take 3 to 5 days to arrive and is valid for 90 days.
- Allow at least 48 hours for the result to reach NIPR, then apply electronically through NIPR. NIPR verifies exam status before allowing submission.
- The current Insurance Producer state application fee is $30, with NIPR transaction fees separate. Company appointment and license issuance remain separate.

Does New Mexico require a prelicensing course?
No. The current PSI and New Mexico bulletin says OSI does not specify an official study manual and candidates are not required to take a prelicensing study course. OSI and PSI do not list or recommend study materials.
Which Life and Health exam applies?
PSI lists the combined Life, Accident and Health or Sickness producer exam as series 18-27. It currently costs $75, contains 150 items, allows 2.5 hours, and requires 70% correct to pass.
Which Property and Casualty exam applies?
PSI lists the combined Property and Casualty producer exam as series 18-31. It currently costs $75, contains 150 items, allows 2.5 hours, and requires 70% correct to pass.
Can I test remotely?
The current PSI bulletin and OSI page list both test-center and online-proctored scheduling. Confirm the available modality when booking.
Can PSI add unscored questions?
Yes. The current bulletin says 5 to 10 experimental questions may be administered in addition to the listed examination items. Those experimental questions are not scored.
How many exam attempts are allowed?
The current bulletin allows up to four attempts for a line of authority. After a fourth unsuccessful attempt, a six-month waiting period applies.
Is a background check required?
Yes for the resident producer path. After passing, complete the national background check using OSI service code 2BH27J. OSI says the report can take 3 to 5 days to arrive and is valid for 90 days.
