Current North Dakota resident sequence

  1. Choose Life & Health, Property & Casualty, or both based on the authority needed.
  2. Use optional independent Self Study if helpful. North Dakota does not require prelicense instruction or proof of study and does not approve or regulate ordinary provider materials.
  3. Schedule each required line-specific PSI exam at a test center or through the currently listed remote-proctored format.
  4. Take each required exam. Life and Annuity, Accident and Health, Property, and Casualty are separate exams currently listed at $64, 110 items, 150 minutes, and 70 percent or 77 correct each.
  5. Complete the applicable hard-copy fingerprint and criminal-history steps. At a PSI site, current amounts are $29 to PSI plus $40 to the North Dakota Attorney General.
  6. Apply through NIPR within one year of passing. The current initial producer state fee is $100, with NIPR transaction fees separate.

North Dakota licensing FAQ

Does North Dakota require a prelicensing course?

No. The Department says applicants may prepare through classroom instruction or self-study and do not submit proof of study. Prelicense-provider materials are not approved or regulated, and the Department cannot recommend a provider.

Are Life and Accident and Health one combined exam?

No. PSI lists separate Life and Annuity and Accident and Health examinations. Each currently costs $64, contains 110 items, allows 150 minutes, and requires 70 percent or 77 correct answers.

Are Property and Casualty one combined exam?

No. PSI lists separate Property and Casualty examinations with the same current $64, 110-item, 150-minute, 70-percent or 77-correct format for each.

Can I test remotely?

The current state-hosted PSI bulletin lists both test-center and remote-proctored formats. Confirm current availability and system requirements when scheduling.

How long is a passing exam usable?

The Department says an exam score is valid for one year and the license application must be received within that year.

What fingerprints are required?

Initial resident producer applicants generally submit hard-copy fingerprint cards for a state and national criminal-history check. The Department does not accept digital fingerprints transmitted electronically to BCI and FBI.

What do fingerprints cost at a PSI site?

The current Department instructions list $29 payable to PSI plus $40 payable by check or money order to the North Dakota Attorney General.

What is the resident producer application fee?

The Department currently lists a $100 initial Insurance Producer application fee. NIPR transaction fees are separate.

Does a course purchase guarantee a pass or license?

No. Study completion, exam passage, fingerprints, background review, application approval, appointment, and license issuance are separate and are not guaranteed.

Course boundary: Each listed $114.95 purchase provides 70 days of optional independent online Self Study access for the selected line pair. PSI examinations, fingerprints, background checks, state/NIPR application, appointments, and license costs are separate. TSI does not claim North Dakota Insurance Department, PSI, or NIPR approval, recommendation, or endorsement and does not guarantee study completion, exam passage, application approval, appointment, or license issuance.
