Inside your California Life & Health course

Work through the online course at your own pace. Use the lessons and practice to decide what to review next.

1. Definitions

Build the insurance vocabulary first. Keep a short review list so unfamiliar terms do not distract you from the coverage or benefit being tested.

2. Health Plans

Connect health coverage, benefits and cost-sharing concepts to the situations in your lessons. Review the explanation behind an answer before trying another question.

3. Life & Annuity

Connect policy roles, life insurance benefits and annuity concepts. Identify what the question is asking before comparing the answer choices.

4. State Regulation

Study the California material alongside the general insurance concepts. Keep a separate list of state-specific topics to revisit during practice review.

Try two course study examples

Choose an answer before opening the explanation. These original examples demonstrate insurance concepts; they are not state examination questions.

Separate the policy roles

Morgan owns a life insurance policy covering Alex, and Casey is the beneficiary. Who is named to receive the death benefit?

Show answer and reasoning 1

Casey, the beneficiary. Morgan is the policyowner and Alex is the insured. Identify which role the question asks about before choosing an answer.

Apply the deductible before coinsurance

Assume $5,000 of covered, allowed health expenses, a $1,000 deductible still to be met, and an insurer that pays 80% afterward. No other cost-sharing or limit applies. What is the insurer’s share?

Show answer and reasoning 2

$5,000 − $1,000 = $4,000; 80% of $4,000 = $3,200. The member pays $1,800 in this example: the deductible plus $800 of coinsurance.

Examples use simplified assumptions. Actual policy terms and loss facts determine real coverage and payments.

Turn practice into a review plan

After working through the topics, use your course’s Practice Tests section to identify weak areas. Return to the relevant lesson and explain why the answer fits. Follow the instructions in Final Exam and any other completion steps shown in your course.

Reinforce your review with the course reference and printable study cards available in your course.

California Life, Accident and Health exam and resident-license path

California removed the former general product-specific study-hour requirement on January 1, 2026. This online Self Study product is optional independent preparation for the combined Life, Accident and Health or Sickness examination.

The separate approved 12-hour course is still required.

Before a California license can be issued, the applicant must complete a CDI-approved 12-hour Ethics and California Insurance Code course that includes one hour of insurance-fraud study. This TSI product is not that approved course, does not provide California prelicensing credit, and does not issue the required completion certificate.

1. Prepare for the full Life examination

Select both Life-Only Agent and Accident and Health Agent for the combined examination and application. The March 2026 bulletin lists 150 scored questions, 195 minutes, a 60% passing score, and a $55 examination fee. PSI may add 1 to 10 unscored experimental questions that still count against exam time.

2. Choose test-center or remote delivery

PSI currently offers both test-center and online remote-proctored examinations. Pass/fail appears on screen and the score report is emailed. A failed report includes a diagnostic count. Ten failures of the same exam type within 12 months trigger a 12-month bar; a passed examination is valid for one year.

3. Follow the live application prompts

Official pages currently conflict on application order: CDI's March 2026 bulletin summarizes exam then application, while its PSI-referral page says apply before scheduling the first exam. NIPR accepts filing before exam verification but requires the exam before approval. Follow the current CDI and PSI prompts. The current state application fee is $188, excluding transaction fees.

4. Fingerprint only after applying

After the license application, use CDI's Capital Live Scan process. CDI lists more than 800 locations and a current total fee of $74: $17 FBI, $32 DOJ and $25 CLS. Fingerprint completion and the separate approved 12-hour course are required before license issuance.

Current official California sources

Course boundary: Purchase provides 70 days of optional independent online Self Study exam preparation. It does not include the separate CDI-approved 12-hour Ethics and California Insurance Code course, California prelicensing credit or certificate, PSI examination, license application, NIPR/Sircon transaction, fingerprint service, appointment, or license. TSI does not claim CDI, PSI, NIPR, Sircon, Capital Live Scan, or IIABCal approval, recommendation, or endorsement and does not guarantee study completion, exam passage, background or application approval, appointment, or license issuance.

California licensing FAQ

Does California still require 20 or 40 hours of product-specific prelicensing study?

No. Effective January 1, 2026, California removed the former general product-study-hour requirement for Life and Accident and Health or Sickness applicants. Independent exam-preparation courses may still be offered.

Is any California education still required before the license is issued?

Yes. A separate California Department of Insurance-approved 12-hour Ethics and California Insurance Code course, including one hour of insurance-fraud study, must be completed before license issuance.

Does this TSI product satisfy the approved 12-hour California course?

No. This product is optional independent exam preparation only. It does not provide the approved 12-hour course, California prelicensing credit, or the required completion certificate.

Can I take one examination for California Life and Accident and Health?

Yes. CDI says applicants may select both Life-Only Agent and Accident and Health Agent when scheduling and applying to take the combined full Life examination.

How many questions are on the California full Life examination?

The March 2026 candidate bulletin lists 150 scored questions and 195 minutes. PSI may add 1 to 10 unscored experimental questions that still count against the examination time.

What score is required on the California full Life examination?

The March 2026 candidate bulletin lists a 60% passing score for Life, Accident and Health or Sickness.

What does the California full Life examination cost?

CDI's current fee schedule lists a $55 examination fee. Other application, fingerprint, out-of-state test-center, transaction, and licensing costs are separate.

Can the California insurance examination be taken remotely?

Yes. PSI currently offers both test-center and online remote-proctored delivery. Confirm current technical, identification, location, and scheduling rules in PSI before booking.

How many times may I fail a California insurance examination?

Ten failures of the same examination type within the prior 12 months trigger a 12-month bar beginning with the last failed examination.

How long is a passed California insurance examination valid?

The March 2026 candidate bulletin says a passed examination is valid for one year.

Should I apply before or after taking the examination?

Current official pages are inconsistent. CDI's March 2026 bulletin summarizes exam then application, while its live PSI-referral page says apply before scheduling the first exam. NIPR accepts an application before exam verification but requires the exam before approval. Follow the current CDI and PSI prompts.

When should a California resident applicant be fingerprinted?

Only after submitting the license application. CDI currently uses Capital Live Scan; its published total is $74, and fingerprint completion is required before license issuance.

Does this course guarantee an exam pass or California license?

No. Study completion, the separate approved 12-hour course, exam passage, application and background approval, appointment, and license issuance are separate and are not guaranteed.

Official-source facts reviewed July 20, 2026. Confirm current course, fee, identification, scheduling, remote-proctoring, application, fingerprint, background, and appointment requirements with CDI, PSI, and NIPR before acting.
