Michigan Life and Accident & Health prelicensing path
This product provides 70 days of access to two Michigan-approved online self-study paths under provider 1166: Life course 96580 for 20 hours and Accident & Health course 96581 for 20 hours. The split courses were approved effective May 13, 2026.
Combined-route rule: complete both approved paths for 40 total hours and obtain both line-specific completion certificates before combined exam 16-80. This product is not one separately approved 40-hour combined course.
1. File the NIPR application
DIFS currently puts the electronic NIPR application first. The state fee is $10 and DIFS currently states a $5 NIPR transaction fee. The application is valid for 180 days.
2. Complete the matching approved path
Complete Life 96580, Accident & Health 96581, or both for the combined route. Each line-specific certificate is valid for 12 months, and TSI reports qualifying completion electronically to DIFS.
3. Choose the matching PSI examination
Life 16-65 is 2 hours / 100 scored items / 72%. Accident & Health 16-66 is 2 hours / 100 / 76%. Combined 16-80 is 2.5 hours / 150 / 75%. Each exam currently costs $41.
4. Use the current test-center rules
Remote-proctored Michigan insurance examinations are discontinued. PSI testing locations are required. PSI may add 1-10 unscored experimental questions that count against exam time.
Application, certificate, and exam clocks are different
The NIPR application is valid for 180 days. Each PE certificate is valid for 12 months and the initial matching examination must be taken during that period. A passing exam result is valid for 12 months. A failed exam cannot be rescheduled the same day; scheduling may resume the next day for the next available appointment.

No. The state approvals are two separate 20-hour courses. Complete both approved paths and obtain both line-specific certificates for the combined Life, Accident & Health route.
How many Michigan prelicensing hours do I need?
DIFS lists 20 hours for Life, 20 hours for Accident & Health, and 40 hours for Life and Health. Follow the line or combined authority you intend to request.
Which Michigan PSI exam matches each course?
PSI lists Life as 16-65, Accident & Health as 16-66, and combined Life, Accident & Health as 16-80.
What are the Michigan Life and Health exam lengths and cut scores?
Life is 2 hours with 100 scored items and a 72% cut score. Accident & Health is 2 hours with 100 scored items and a 76% cut score. The combined exam is 2.5 hours with 150 scored items and a 75% cut score.
How much does a Michigan insurance examination cost?
The current PSI bulletin lists a $41 fee for each examination. Examination fees are separate from course and licensing fees.
Can I take the Michigan insurance exam remotely?
No. Remote-proctored Michigan insurance examinations are discontinued. Current exams are available only at PSI testing locations.
