Massachusetts Property & Casualty exam and resident-license path
The Division-published producer guidance says prelicensing coursework is no longer required for individual producers and recommends preparation. The Division does not recommend or provide a specific study product. This 70-day online Self Study product is optional independent exam preparation, not state-required or state-endorsed education.
Dated testing transition: exams on or before July 16, 2026 used Prometric; July 17-21 is a testing blackout; Pearson begins administering exams July 22. Beginning July 22, examinations are in person at authorized Pearson test centers and remote testing is not available.
1. Prepare for two separate exams
Massachusetts uses separate Property and Casualty producer exams. Each exam costs $37. Each outline contains 50 scored general-knowledge questions plus 5 unscored pretest questions and 30 scored Massachusetts-specific questions plus 5 unscored pretest questions: 80 scored plus 10 unscored pretest questions per exam.
2. Schedule conservatively
Pearson's current program page says appointments may be made up to one calendar day before testing, while the June candidate handbook says at least 48 hours and no walk-ins. Use the stricter 48-hour lead time and confirm the current appointment requirement when scheduling.
3. Understand scores and retakes
The scaled passing score is 70, not 70% or a raw number correct. Pearson provides pass or fail before a candidate leaves the test center; failed candidates receive a numeric score and diagnostic information. To retake, register again and pay a new exam fee.
4. Apply after passing both exams
After passing both required exams, apply through NIPR. Current rules list a $225 producer-license fee plus a $75 lead-paint surcharge for Property, Casualty, or Personal Lines; NIPR transaction fees are separate. Current resident-producer rules do not list a universal fingerprint requirement, though supporting records may be requested.
