Start here: Compare the two Tennessee insurance license course routes, then use the current resident exam, application, and fingerprint sequence below. Requirements can change, so confirm the final steps with the state before applying.

Is prelicensing education required in Tennessee?

Tennessee’s current resident-producer procedure states a 30-hour prelicensing requirement for the Title line. It directs applicants for the non-Title producer lines on this page to the examination step. TSI’s Tennessee Life/Health and Property/Casualty courses are self-study exam preparation, not mandatory Tennessee education.

Exam, application, and fingerprint steps

Exam: Schedule and pass the applicable Tennessee producer examination with Pearson VUE. Pearson VUE sends the score to the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance.

Application and background check: Complete the fingerprint-based background check at least two business days before filing. The current state procedure says to wait 48 hours after the examination, then apply through NIPR with the $50 filing fee.

  1. Choose Life/Health or Property/Casualty.
  2. Prepare for and pass the Pearson VUE examination.
  3. Complete the required fingerprint process before filing.
  4. Wait the stated 48 hours, then apply through NIPR.
