✅ Texas Insurance Continuing Education (CE) Requirements

To maintain an active license in Texas, resident agents and adjusters must complete 24 hours of Continuing Education (CE) every two years. This requirement applies to most license types including Life, Health, Property & Casualty, and Adjusters.

• 3 of the 24 hours must be in Ethics — required for all licenses.
• At least 12 hours must be completed in a classroom or classroom-equivalent format, such as online interactive courses from TSI National.
• CE must be completed before your license expiration date, which falls on the last day of your birth month, every two years.

📌 Specialty Certification Requirements

Some lines of business require specific training courses in addition to the general 24-hour CE requirement:

• Annuity Best Interest Training: One-time, 4-hour course before selling annuities. Applies to Life licensees. Additional annuity CE is not required each renewal cycle.
• Long-Term Care (LTC): 8-hour initial certification plus 4 hours of LTC-specific CE every renewal period to sell LTC products.
• Medicare-Related Products: No state-specific CE required, but carriers often require annual certification.
• Flood Insurance (NFIP): FEMA requires a 3-hour Flood CE course for agents selling NFIP policies. Required once every renewal period.

⚠️ Penalties for Non-Compliance

• CE hours not completed by the deadline will result in a fine of $50 per deficient hour up to $500.
• You have a 90-day grace period to make up CE and pay fines before your license becomes inactive.
• If not resolved within 90 days, you must reapply for your license and may face delays in authorization to sell.

🧾 CE Exemptions

Exemptions may be available under the following conditions:

• Licensed for 20 consecutive years or more in Texas with no disciplinary action — exempt from CE but must still complete Ethics every cycle.
• Limited lines or special categories (e.g., Funeral Pre-Need) may be subject to different rules or no CE at all.
• Request CE waivers using TDI Form FIN517.

• Pass the final exam in your portal
• Receive an instant Certificate of Completion
• We report your education to the state within 48 hours

🟦 States That Do NOT Require Pre-Licensing

These 31 states allow you to take the state exam without mandatory coursework:

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland,  Massachusetts, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wyoming
