Montana Insurance CE Renewal Requirements and Checklist

Montana insurance continuing education is easiest to manage when you track the hour type, deadline, and reporting lag together. Use this checklist before your renewal date.

Montana at a glance

Short answers first. Open a detail only when you need the source-backed nuance.

Standard cycleBy renewal deadline

Details

Montana CSI states that resident and nonresident producers, adjusters, and consultants licensed in Montana must complete continuing education every 2 years.

Major-line requirementReview detail

Details

Property, casualty, surety, title, life, health, disability, adjuster, and consultant licensees generally need 24 approved credit hours by the license lapse or renewal date each biennium.

Ethics3 ethics hrs

Details

At least 3 approved credit hours of ethics are required each biennium for the major-line group.

Legislative updateReview detail

Details

At least 1 approved credit hour must cover legislative changes in Montana insurance statutes and administrative rules.

Reporting lagVerify provider

Details

Providers report CE to CSI, but Montana warns reporting may take up to 30 days. Completing CE less than 30 days before expiration can risk a lapse.

Limited and specialty rules

  • Limited lines credit, prepaid legal, and surety bail bonds: 5 approved credit hours each biennium, including 1 legislative changes credit.
  • Annuities: producers selling annuities must complete a one-time 4-credit training course approved by CSI.
  • Flood: resident producers selling federal flood insurance must complete one-time 3-hour NFIP training.
  • Long-term care: producers selling LTC must complete one-time training of at least 8 hours and ongoing training of at least 4 hours each 24-month period.

Renewal checklist

  1. Look up your Montana renewal date and CE transcript through SBS.
  2. Confirm the CE requirement for each line of authority you hold.
  3. Schedule ethics and legislative-update credits early so they are not missed.
  4. Complete CE at least 30 days before expiration when possible so provider reporting has time to post.
  5. Check the transcript again before filing renewal through NIPR.
  6. Save completion records in case a provider upload is delayed or disputed.

Course planning

TSI National can help you plan continuing education, but Montana CSI controls CE approval, transcript posting, and renewal decisions. Start with your SBS transcript, then choose approved courses that fill the exact gaps. You can review available training options on the TSI National course results page.
