  1. Choose Life & Health, Property & Casualty, or both based on the authority needed.
  2. Use optional independent Self Study if helpful. North Carolina has not required a prelicensing course for these major lines since October 1, 2025, but the state examinations remain required.
  3. Apply through NIPR first and wait for the Pearson VUE email containing the NPN and examination authorization required to schedule.
  4. Take each required line-specific Pearson VUE exam. Life, Accident and Health, Property, and Casualty are separate exams currently listed at $45 and 1 hour 15 minutes each.
  5. Pass the required exams before the six-month application eligibility end date. Pearson VUE transmits results to NIPR to match the pending application.
  6. Complete the required electronic fingerprint and supporting-document steps, then wait for licensing review and issuance before acting as a producer.
