Hawaii insurance renewal is easiest when CE is finished early enough for provider reporting to reach the Insurance Division before the renewal fee is submitted. Use this checklist to avoid last-minute renewal blocks.
CE and renewal snapshot
| Total CE | 24 credits for the renewal period. |
|---|---|
| If licensed only for Life/Accident and Health or only for Property/Casualty | 21 credits in that class of insurance plus 3 credits in ethics, Hawaii insurance laws, or Hawaii insurance rules. |
| If licensed for both Life/Accident and Health and Property/Casualty | 10 Life/Accident and Health credits, 11 Property/Casualty credits, and 3 credits in ethics, Hawaii insurance laws, or Hawaii insurance rules. |
| Recommended completion timing | Complete CE no later than 15 days before the renewal due date so provider reporting can be received. |
| Duplicate courses | A duplicate course counts only once in the same renewal period. |
| Carryover | Hawaii does not carry unused CE credits into the next renewal period. |
| Certificate retention | Keep CE certificates for 4 years. Do not submit certificates unless the Insurance Division requests them. |
Renewal checklist
- Confirm your active Hawaii license lines and renewal due date.
- Choose courses that fit your license class and include the required ethics, Hawaii law, or Hawaii rules credits.
- Complete CE at least 15 days before the renewal deadline.
- Check that your provider has reported the credits. Hawaii says providers submit course completion information within 15 days.
- Submit the renewal fee only after CE has been completed and received by the Insurance Division.
- Save CE certificates for 4 years in case of audit or state request.
Compliance notes
- Do not take the same course twice in one renewal period expecting double credit.
- Do not rely on carryover. Hawaii’s FAQ says excess credits do not apply to the next cycle.
- Nonresidents generally rely on home-state CE reciprocity, but should still verify renewal filing steps.
- Life and variable life/variable annuity producers should separately confirm annuity training obligations.
