Texas insurance CE requirements depend on your license type. Check the required hours and instruction method before choosing courses, and finish your CE by your license expiration date.
Match the hours to your license
TDI lists these requirements for each two-year renewal period:
- 24 hours, including 3 ethics hours: General Lines life/health and property/casualty, Life Agent, Personal Lines property/casualty, Managing General Agent, and adjuster/public adjuster licenses.
- 10 hours, including 3 ethics hours: County Mutual, Life Insurance Under $25,000, and Limited Lines Agent licenses.

Online delivery and instruction method are different
At least half your CE hours must use classroom or classroom-equivalent instruction. An online course can be classroom-equivalent; online delivery does not automatically make a course self-study. Check the course’s approved instruction method. TDI explains this distinction in its continuing education guidance.
Understand the deadline and deficiency fines
CE is due by license expiration. TDI recommends finishing at least 30 days earlier so the provider has time to report completion.
TDI describes a 90-day period after expiration to complete deficient hours and pay the applicable fine. If both are not resolved within that period, the license is inactivated and a new application is required. TDI says a new license will not be granted until the deficient hours and fine are resolved.
The fine is $50 for each deficient hour, capped at $500 per deficient license type. For questions about your invoice, contact TDI. Check your actual license status rather than treating the remediation period as confirmation that your license is active.
Check missing credit before buying another course
If completed coursework is missing from your transcript, contact the course provider for an update. Providers have up to 30 days after completion to report credits. Also check the instruction method and whether you repeated the same course during the licensing term: duplicate courses count only once, and hours beyond the self-study limit may not count.
