What does a Property and Casualty license cover?
Property insurance concerns covered loss or damage to property. Casualty insurance includes liability and other covered risks. P&C study commonly includes homeowners, auto, commercial property, commercial liability, policy provisions, and state insurance rules. The exact authority and examination names depend on your state.
Personal Lines is a narrower license path for personal insurance risks. It is not interchangeable with the broader P&C path when your job involves commercial insurance. Life and Health are different license lines. If an employer has specified a license, confirm its exact name before buying a course or scheduling an examination.
Insurance producers are licensed by state regulators; completing a training course does not itself issue a license. The NAIC’s producer licensing overview explains this state-based system.
How to get a P&C insurance license
- Identify your resident state and license line. Check the insurance department’s resident individual-producer instructions. Requirements for agencies, nonresidents, temporary licenses, and people with prior licenses can differ.
- Check whether prelicensing education is required. Where it is required, confirm the course’s approval, format, hours, final examination, and completion rules before enrolling. Where it is optional, choose exam preparation that matches your state’s examination.
- Study and complete the course requirements. Work through the state-specific material, lessons, quizzes, and practice tests. Some courses also require identity information, a proctor, an affidavit, or a certificate before the state examination.
- Take the state licensing examination. Use the regulator’s current examination vendor and candidate handbook for registration, identification, permitted materials, and certificate instructions. A course practice test or final is separate from this examination.
- Complete the remaining application steps. Follow your state’s instructions for fingerprints or background checks, application timing, fees, and any other conditions. Check the issued license and any appointment requirements before starting work.
Required education and optional exam preparation are different
There is no single prelicensing-hour rule that applies to every state. Alabama no longer requires or approves prelicensing education, while the appropriate licensing examination remains required. Maryland ended its former prelicensing education requirement for examination applicants in October 2024. These states still offer a reason to study, but an optional preparation course should not be described as mandatory state credit. See the Alabama DOI notice and Maryland Bulletin 24-19.
Texas lists the examination, fingerprint process, and application as separate steps for the regular resident General Lines P&C path. For Texas-specific instructions, use our Texas P&C license guide and the current TDI application page.

Self-study or a virtual class?
Self-study is suited to students who want to work through online lessons and practice on their own schedule. Virtual options pair online course access with scheduled live instruction or review. On matching product pages, the format comparison links show the other option and its current full course price.
Read the selected product’s course-role notice: optional live review and required instruction are not the same. The product page explains how the live sessions relate to the online course. Existing students should check My Courses for available upgrade options before purchasing a second course.
What should you budget for?
Plan for the course purchase plus any separate state examination, fingerprint, application, and other required fees. Course prices and class dates appear on the product pages. Check current regulator and exam-vendor fees directly; the course price is not an all-inclusive licensing fee.
How long does it take?
Your timeline depends on the required course work, study pace, available examination appointments, and application processing. The listed TSI licensing products provide 70 days of online access; this access window is not a promise that the state will issue a license within a particular period. Set aside time for practice and any required completion paperwork before scheduling your examination.
